Crossroads Semester 12 – Prayer

The Prayer semester helps teens develop an intimate dialogue with God in ways that permeate their daily lives.
Units included in the semester:

a. Communication with God

Youth Group Meeting: This meeting will begin your prayer semester by helping the teens understand the basic definitions of prayer. In particular, this session will show the teens that the first step in prayer is recognizing that we are in a living and loving relationship with God. We will help the teens understand that God loves us and wants intimacy with us. We will give the teens an opportunity to respond to God and connect with Him in prayer.

Going Deeper Meeting: In this first ‘Going Deeper’ meeting, our goal will be to give the teens the most important reasons why prayer is so important. Looking into the Scriptures, we will be teaching the teens how prayer is our communication with God. We will examine why we need to keep communication with God going, and we will give examples of how to keep that communication vibrant.

b. Setting up Prayer Times

Youth Group Meeting: This meeting will help teens get in the habit of spending daily, one-on-one time with the Lord in prayer. In particular, it will show how society promotes a fast-paced, unhealthy, unprayerful lifestyle. We will help the teens prioritize their daily lives, making room for prayer.

Going Deeper Meeting: In this second ‘Going Deeper’ meeting, we will continue to address obstacles we have in prayer and the importance of establishing a habit in our prayer life. We will also introduce them to the Church’s form of daily prayer called the ‘Liturgy of the Hours’.

c. Praying the Scriptures

Youth Group Meeting: This meeting on praying the Scriptures will discuss the place that Scripture has in prayer, in particular, that it serves as God’s voice to us. We will help the teens see how Scripture can be incorporated in their daily prayer life.

Going Deeper Meeting: In this ‘Going Deeper’ meeting, our goals will be to continue to encourage the teens to be committed to having a devotion to Christ in the Scriptures and to introduce them to a form of praying called ‘Lectio Divina’, which is a way to meditate on and contemplate the Scriptures.

d. Prayer in the Holy Spirit

Youth Group Meeting: The Holy Spirit in us makes it possible for us to address God as our Father in prayer. The Holy Spirit gives life to all our prayer. This meeting will help the teens understand the Person and mission of the Holy Spirit. We will give the teens an explanation of the role of the Holy Spirit in prayer. We will help the teens turn to the Holy Spirit in their personal prayer lives.

Going Deeper Meeting: In this ‘Going Deeper’ meeting, our goal will be to give the teens a deeper look into who the Holy Spirit is, His mission and His role in their daily prayer lives. We will be taking a look at the Holy Spirit novena as an example of how to pray to the Holy Spirit and the history behind it.

e. Mary and the Rosary

Youth Group Meeting: The Blessed Virgin Mary has a unique role not only in God’s plan of salvation, but in the life of each individual Christian. Following John 19, in which Mary is given to all people to be their spiritual mother, this meeting will show the teens the importance of Mary as our spiritual mother. We will challenge and equip the teens to turn to Mary as their spiritual mother through prayer. We will show that a relationship with Mary will help them get closer to Jesus than without a relationship with Mary.

Going Deeper Meeting: In this ‘Going Deeper’ meeting, our goal will be to explain to the teens more about the importance of a devotion to Mary. We will go more into depth about the Rosary and the power that comes from praying it.

f. The Communion of Saints

Youth Group Meeting: The Body of Christ is not separated by death. Those of us on earth can and should use our departed brothers and sisters in Christ as intercessors for us. This meeting will help the teens understand the Body of Christ as the communion of all the faithful, including those on earth, in purgatory and in heaven. We will challenge the teens to see the Saints in heaven as those who can intercede (pray) for us in God’s presence. Finally, we will help the teens begin a devotional life to the Saints.

Going Deeper Meeting: In this ‘Going Deeper’ meeting, our goal will be to give the teens the scriptural foundation for intercessory prayer, as well has give them tools so they can incorporate intercessory prayer into their daily prayer. We will continue to help them develop an intercessory role with the saints in heaven. This session is not meant to be apologetic in nature, that is, it will not teach the teens how to defend the intercessory prayer with the saints. This meeting will teach them how to pray with the saints and with each other.
